What qualifies as sales packaging?

Sales packaging is used to protect goods and products and ensure their safe handover to the consumer.

Sales packaging is made of different materials, such as glass, paper, cardboard, plastics, metals, Tetra Pak or composite materials. Packaging is sorted and recycled according to the source material to ensure its environmentally-friendly disposal.

What are your obligations?

According to the Law on Closed Cycle Management and the Packaging Ordinance (as of 1 January 2019 Packaging Act), manufacturers and distributors are obligated to regularly collect and sort their sales packaging placed onto the market and recycle them in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. However, in practice this is associated with a wide range of tasks which are difficult to manage on your own.

The Packaging Act

The Packaging Act came into effect on 1 January 2019. The new regulation contains several important changes for manufacturers and distributors. We have summarised them for you.

Update: On 20 January 2021, Germany’s Federal Cabinet approved a new Draft Law transposing the Single Use Plastics Directive (EU-Plastics Directive 2019) and the Waste Framework Directive into the Packaging Act (VerpackG). This is intended to bring the Packaging Act into line with the current EU directives and to improve its enforcement. The law came into force at 3 July 2021.
