Electronic waste
Safe disposal—even with harmful components.
Electrical and electronic equipment such as fridges, televisions or toasters contain valuable raw materials. These can be sensibly reused through appropriate recycling depending once the equipment is defective or replaced. But some of the equipment contains harmful components which require special disposal by specialists.
What are your obligations?
The recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment is often abbreviated to WEEE and is regulated at EU level in the WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU.
In Germany, manufacturers and importers are obligated according to the German Electrical Equipment Act (ElektroG) to take back their goods and ensure safe disposal of hazardous substances. A quantity report by type of electrical and electronic equipment must also be compiled.
